They’ll tell you what they find, then you can decide if you want to fix it yourself or let them do it. So one idea, ask a shop to do a smoke test. If no smoke is getting out, but the computer says there is a leak, then the next suspect is the pressure (or vacuum) sensor may be bad. The PCM has been updated to include a stay-alive microprocessor that’s designed to control the CVS and monitor the FTPS key-on, engine-off (KOEO) without energizing the entire PCM. Then they just look around for where the smoke is getting out. The system is called an engine off natural vacuum (EONV), and primarily uses the CVS and FTPS after the vehicle is shut off to check the gas vapor system. Shops have a sort of similar way as the under-water method to find an evap leak fast, a machine that injects smoke into the top of the gas tank. The exceptions are its hybrid electric vehicles, which use an evaporative leak check monitor (ELCM) similar to the Toyota key-off vacuum pump system, and 2011-03 Ford Fiestas, which use a natural vacuum leak detection (NVLD) system similar to the one used by Kia and BMW. If you could find it like you’d find a leak in a tire – putting it underwater and looking for bubbles – that would definitely make it simpler, but alas, you can’t do it that way with a car. So you now have to just go through all the other possibilities one by one. The purge valve is a common one, it gets stuck on sometimes, but it sounds like you’re sure you’ve eliminated that as the source of the leak. 8 Simple Steps to completing your smog drive cycle with helpful. Taking a look at Tester’s diagram, you can see there’s lots of places for an evap leak to occur. GM General Motors Emissions Drive Cycle for Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile. Because not only does it have roll-over valve, it also has a refueling control valv… Since the advent of OBDII, it’s impossible to flood the carbon canister in the EVAP system on today’s vehicles. The evolution of evaporative emissions systems has been driven by changes in emissions standards. This is how Ford currently gets the job done. But if the valve sticks open, fuel vapors can be forced into the engine while refueling, and this can cause a flooded condition where it requires that the accelerator be depressed in order to start the engine. Ford's Evap System: Operation & Testing By Bob Pattengale Vehicle manufacturers use a variety of methods to reliably test evaporative emissions systems and identify increasingly smaller leaks. The second, and one that at times can be extremely frustrating, is getting the EVAP monitor to complete. We’ll review how to diagnose a fault code analysis in this Tool Briefing. The first, and more common, is fault code analysis. The problem might be with the purge valve in the EVAP system. There are really two main topics of fuel evaporative system diagnosis.
